For Vice-Admiral Robert Duff of Fettersso, Kincardine (c.1721 - 1787)

  • In 1746 Robert Duff was in command of the bomb vessel HMS Terror, serving off the Scottish coast.
  • Then he commanded a 44-gunship, HMS Anglesea, off the Irish and English coasts
  • Signed the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 ending the War of the Austrian Succession
  • Duff's next ship, in 1755, was the 50-gun HMS Rochester
  • He saw action at the capture of Martinique during January and February 1762
  • Duff was promoted to rear-admiral of the blue on 31 March 1775
    (The year this silver tablespoon was made; maybe he bought a set of cutlery to celebrate this promotion)
  • 1777 - appointed to the command of the Mediterranean, with the 60-gun HMS Panther as his flagship
