In 1746 Robert Duff was in command of the bomb vessel HMS Terror, serving off the Scottish coast.
Then he commanded a 44-gunship, HMS Anglesea, off the Irish and English coasts
Signed the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 ending the War of the Austrian Succession
Duff's next ship, in 1755, was the 50-gun HMS Rochester
He saw action at the capture of Martinique during January and February 1762
Duff was promoted to rear-admiral of the blue on 31 March 1775
(The year the silver sauce was made; maybe he bought a set of cutlery to celebrate this promotion)
1777 - appointed to the command of the Mediterranean, with the 60-gun HMS Panther as his flagship
